I am a Lecturer with the Teacher Educator Service of Sri Lanka and currently work at Wayamba National Colleges of Education. I engage with academic works including action research related to preservice teacher education. I have 13 years of experience as a secondary science teacher as well as 2 years of experience as a school principal. I am very interested in doing action research because it is a part of my professional career. I have presented two action research projects at Sri Lankan research conferences previously and two action research papers at two online international conferences in 2020. Two of my action research papers were published in action research related magazines, one in “thinetha,” a magazine in Sri Lanka’s North-western province and another in a magazine in the Chilaw Educational Zone, Sri Lanka. I have conducted action research for the partial fulfilment of my Bachelor's degree in Education as well as for my Master’s degree in education.

    Project Summary

Scientific literacy and critical thinking are key components of science education aiming to prepare students to think and function as responsible citizens in a world where science and technology play a key role (Vieira & Tenreiro-Vieira, 2014). Students should be given opportunities to engage in learning experiences that promote development of critical-thinking skills, resulting in their ability to take responsible actions in contexts and situations of personal and social relevance. As stated by the National Evaluation and Research Services (NERS) in Sri Lanka (2008:3; 2012:57; 2013:59), critical-thinking skills are necessary for students in Grades 10 and 11 and can be promoted using scientific methods. Scientific methods are important to the development of scientific theories, which explain empirical laws in a scientifically rational manner by testing through experiments or observations (Encyclopeadia Britannica, 2020). The goal of this action research was developing critical-thinking skills of 10th-grade science students in my classroom based on the curriculum framework formulated by NERS of Sri Lanka. The study was conducted with 12 10th-grade students, utilizing interviews with students to identify and address the problems faced by the students in explaining scientific phenomena. Behaviours that demonstrated student’s critical-thinking skills were observed using participant observations and reflective journal writing. The intervention plan developed was based on the five steps of observation, reflection, action, evaluation and modification. It was found that strengthening critical-thinking skills can be achieved through direct teacher intervention with students having difficulty explaining scientific phenomena.

    Project Context

In Sri Lanka, a 13-year education system consists of three stages, including primary (Grades 1-5), secondary (6-11) and senior secondary (12-13). In the secondary stage, Science is a compulsory subject, with critical-thinking skills an important part of the subject area. “Explanation of scientific phenomena” is a required component of the curriculum, and students are to obtain skills to explain scientific phenomena using the scientific method, including observation of phenomena, analysis of phenomenon, establishing assumptions, developing plans to test hypotheses, testing assumptions, reporting of test observations, accepting or refuting assumptions, and presenting conclusions. When I was working as a secondary science teacher, I observed that many students’ lack awareness of scientific phenomena as well as lack critical-thinking skills in their daily lives. In an effort to address these challenges I found it necessary to change my teaching style, and I conducted action research in the context of examining the changes and the impact of these changes on students.

    Research Goal, Method, and Outcome

    Background and Research Goal

Critical thinking involves constantly asking questions, examining information and evidence, and figuring out conclusions (Ennis, 1987, 1993). For students to learn critical-thinking skills, they need to be provided with an environment in which they can share ideas (Bailin & Battersby, 2010). Students learn better when they have the opportunity to express themselves. For example, Pimm (1987) posited that the Think-Pair-Share strategy (TPS) improves students’ personal communication skills and their internal cognitive processes. The use of the TPS strategy related to the subject of science is useful because this strategy helps students practice making assumptions, critical in scientific research, as well as forming questions and thinking about the methods for conducting experiments.

Activities related to a “Grade 10 Science Teacher Training Manual” were prepared by the Sri Lankan National Institute of Education in 2015. The activities have been important in the teaching and learning of scientific interpretations of everyday environmental phenomena since that year. When students face questions regarding environmental phenomena, learning from the curricular activities can help them make hypotheses and plan experiments to examine the phenomena. In this study, a self-oriented and friendly environment was prepared for my students in an innovative manner based on an approach to the explanation of scientific phenomena.

In this study the Research Goal was developing critical thinking skills of 10th-grade science students in my classroom based on the curriculum framework assigned in Sri Lanka. Research objectives were:

    • Identify critical-thinking skills needed by my 10th-grade students in accordance with the Sri Lankan Science curriculum related to scientific method
    • Identify the critical-thinking skills of my 10th-grade students before an intervention.
    • Identify problems faced by my students in explaining scientific phenomena
    • Plan and implement an intervention to strengthen the critical-thinking skills of particular students
    • Assess the intervention effects on developing critical-thinking skills of my 10th-grade students.

    Method

Action research was used in this study. The Whitehead and McNiff (2006) cycle of observation, reflection, action, evaluation and modification (Figure 1; see Slide #2) was selected as the method.

    Participants and Pre-Intervention Activities

Students (N = 41) studying in a 10th-grade science class of a boy’s school participated in this study. However, this research report regards 12 students who had obtained marks of less than 40% for the subject of Science. Content analysis was conducted to identify critical-thinking skills needed by 10th-grade students according to the Sri Lankan Science curriculum. Second, to identify the pre-intervention critical-thinking skills of the participants, a test was administered.  Interviews were conducted to identify the problems faced by students in explaining scientific phenomena. Observations were used to identify students’ natural behaviours while engaging in class activities, and reflective journals were maintained throughout the process of research by the students and me.

    Intervention Steps

Step 1: Observation – Identify participants’ natural behaviours while engaging in explanation of scientific phenomena.

Step 2: Reflection – Introduce and maintain the use of a student diary providing familiarity with reflections. Students were directed to write reflective journal entries based on the activities they conducted as a part of classroom work focussed on science.

Step 3: action – Provide opportunities for scientific observations and presentations of everyday phenomena, using the Think–Pair–Share learning technique.

Step 4: evaluation – Students were given two weeks to observe the day-to-day phenomena encountered from a scientific point of view, to prepare presentations on their observations, and to prepare a report.

Step 5: modification – Check the accuracy of the notes kept in the student diaries and provide the necessary support for improving the accuracy.

All collected data were compiled and tallied based on the 8 steps of critical-thinking skills delineated in Sri Lanka’s secondary science education curriculum.

    Outcomes

CRITICAL-THINKING SKILLS RELATED TO SCIENTIFIC METHODS IDENTIFIED PRIOR TO THE INTERVENTION

The results were based on students’ levels of critical-thinking skills associated with scientific methods. Again, the critical-thinking skills include observation of phenomena, analysis of the phenomenon, establishing assumptions, developing plans to test hypotheses, testing assumptions, reporting of test observations, accepting or refuting assumptions, and presenting conclusions (Table 2; see Slide #3).

Pre-intervention levels of critical-thinking skills. The test used for the purpose of this study included a question based on scientific explanation of plant transplantation: “can you guess the new fruit that we will have by transplanting from woodapple and citrus?” According to their answers, the above mentioned 8 criteria were considered in awarding student marks and the relevant data are shown in Table 1 (see Slide #3) for observable behaviours of students’ critical-thinking skills before the intervention. The results indicated that all students were able to observe and analyze the phenomenon. But establishing assumptions about the phenomenon were made by students A, B and C only. All students were unable to perform the behaviours such as planning to test assumptions, testing assumptions, reporting observations based on  testing the assumptions, accepting or rejecting the assumptions and  presenting the conclusions. Only three students were able to obtain a score of 30 or 35, which is lower than the curriculum standard.

Problems faced by students in explaining scientific phenomena based on the pre-intervention activity. There were two types of problems faced by students in explaining scientific phenomena.

[1] Problems related to understanding the principles of science

After analysing the students’ problems in explaining a scientific phenomenon, interventions were planned in relation to each student. With the transplantation question, students, A, B, C, D, E, F, H, J, K, L, M, and N faced problems with relating the principles of science with applying critical thinking. As a result an activity was given to provide solutions to the problems related to the principles of science. Students were introduced to the scientific method in the introductory instruction for each of the activities conducted.

[2] Problems related to the maintenance of student diary and reflective journals

After recognizing that students A, B, J, and H had difficulties maintaining their diary, the teacher’s diary was shared as an example. Students’ diaries were also checked and necessary individual assistance with making a diary entry was provided.

Most students reported that there was clarity regarding reflective learning. Only students J, K, L, M, and N, were considered lacking in ability to engage in reflective journaling. An opportunity was provided to watch educational videos promoting self-study and providing explanations for experiences in reflective learning. The educational videos were used to guide students in improving their observational notes. The reflective journal model was introduced as a process for recording reflections on activities.

ACTION: PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING AN INTERVENTION FOR STUDENTS’ SELF-ACTIVITIES THROUGH A 5-STEP INTERVENTION

Step1: Pre-Intervention Observation – identify their natural behaviours while engaging in explanation of scientific phenomena [Note. Step 1 is described above.]

Step 2: Reflection – introduce and maintain the use of a student diary for providing familiarity with reflections and directing students to write a reflective journal based on the activity they conducted.

Students were provided the opportunity to prepare a report based on the question “Why did that happen?” using the student’s diary. The use of the diary was included in the hope that such writing, based on classroom science instruction, would increase students’ familiarity with the scientific method. Then they were asked to practice reflection by asking the following question of themselves: What did I do? How did I do it? What happened? Why did I do what I did? What did it look like? and What did I learn? Students also had questions regarding keeping notes in their diary. I gave them the opportunity to discuss and find answers to their questions and use as much time as they needed.  In addition, I maintained reflective notes to guide me in determining whether the adoption of the scientific method in the classroom required further special interventions.

Reflection in action. I focused on students A, B, C, D, E, F, H, J, K, L, M and N (see Slide #3) more than usual because I observed several times that they were not as interested in the scientific method of activities in the classroom as the other students. In addition, students J, K, and L behaved restlessly. I asked myself “Why are these students not interested in the activities?” For example, in regard to activities related to the development of respiration and the movement of living beings, why were students D, E, F, H, J, L, M, and N,  unable to form assumptions regarding plant growth as well as plant and animal breath?

Reflection on action. I thought again and again about the activities that were done in the classroom regarding plant transplanting, electrical circuit development and the growth and movement of living beings. Why did several children behave uneasily in this activity? I hypothesized that it was difficult for these students to make assumptions because it was difficult for them to create a statement using critical-thinking skills.

Reflection for action. Making assumptions means making new statements using critical-thinking skills. By giving students support in asking questions about classroom activities I sought to help them challenge environmental phenomena from a scientific point of view. I hypothesized that through such support I would see how students could become interested in forming hypotheses and become more willing to discover. For example, at the stage of “developing plan for testing hypothesis” students are to create a working plan using critical-thinking skills. By providing students support in forming their questions about classroom activity I could help them engage in critical thinking such as “what is my aim?, how do I create a plan for an experiment based on my hypothesis? Can I analyse the hypothesis ?, what  are the variables involved in my  hypothesis?, what are the things I need to setup for an experiment?, what is my working plan? How do I gather data?, what are important data for me to gather that show consistency with observed phenomena?” In this way a student could create a working plan for a scientific experiment in an effort to increase their ability to explain a scientific phenomenon while simultaneously developing their critical-thinking skills.

Overall, the solution I surmised from the analysis of the reflective notes was that assigning environmental phenomena as a challenge and pairing the assignment with the use of a peer-learning approach would be a good way to help students develop their critical-thinking skills. In discussing with and questioning each other, the students would be free from the domination of the teacher and would become the owners of their own learning. I surmised that giving students the opportunity to carry out the assignment in a more self-regulatory manner would be a worthy experiment.

Step3: Action – provided opportunities for scientific observation and presentation of everyday phenomena.

Under the “Why did that happen?” theme, I provided students with opportunities for scientific observations and presentations of everyday phenomena. The Think– Pair– Share learning technique was used. Students were divided into six groups according to their critical-thinking skill level; that is, approximately or close to proficiency level, high level requiring further development, middle level requiring further development and lower level requiring further development (Figure 2; Slide #4). Then, students in different levels were paired, so a student in a lower level can learn from a student in an upper level who can also learn from sharing his understanding with his peer. For example, Student J noted that the learning activity with Student B was an amazing opportunity for him to develop his skill in explaining scientific phenomena. Student K wrote in his reflection, “Being able to discuss with my friend A was a great help for me. When I was sharing my views with my friend, he explained his view logically. When we were facing some issues, we were working first individually. Then we prepared a report using systematic explanation of scientific phenomena. I am determined to continue using the method in daily lives. I am motivated to setup the experiment and find things needed for the experiment.”

Step 4: Post-Intervention Evaluation – students were given two weeks for observations from a scientific point of view of day-to-day phenomena encountered during the study.

Based on each student’s presentation and a written report, each student’s observable behaviours regarding their critical-thinking skill development were tallied (Table 2; Slide #5). All participants were able to obtain marks of over 40% based on their manifested abilities in observing the phenomenon, analysing the phenomenon, establishing the hypothesis, and planning to test hypothesis, which shows an improvement when compared with the pre-intervention performance (Table 1; Slide #3). However, only 9 students, A, B, C, E, F, H, L, M, and N, reached the level of testing hypothesis. Students B, F, and M could report the observations correctly. Finally, none of the students were able to obtain marks for the last two steps, accepting or rejecting the hypothesis (Step 7) and making conclusions (Step 8). If more cycles of interventions were applied in those steps showing deficiencies, more or all students could have succeeded because more practice in applying critical thinking could have helped them develop their ability for following the scientific method.

Step 5: Modification – checked the accuracy of the notes kept in the student diaries and provided the necessary support

In maintaining the student diary and using the scientific method, consideration was given to whether the notes kept in the student diary were written in a scientific manner. Students A, B, H, and J diaries were scientifically identified and errors were noted, with the teacher’s nature diary provided as an example to facilitate the writing of notes by students. The accuracy of the notes kept in the student diaries was checked and necessary supports were provided for improving accuracy. Student visits with the teacher during their free time and the seeking of advice increased.

ASSESS THE INTERVENTION SUCCESS ON DEVELOPING CRITICAL-THINKING SKILLS

Table 3 (Slide #6) provides comparison of pre- and post-intervention scores on the same question. Of the 12 students in the sample, the maximum score increase related to obtaining these critical-thinking skills was 45%. The maximum score growth was reported for two students, F and M, who scored 15% in the pre-test. The maximum marks recorded in the post-intervention were 60% from students B, F and M.

    Conclusions

Identifying the present level of critical-thinking skills is important if the goal is to help students further develop the skills. Direct intervention by the teacher on problems faced by students regarding scientific explanation of phenomena is helpful for students’ application of the scientific method and for strengthening critical thinking skills. This research may be a resource for teachers in teaching science for the development of critical-thinking skills in students. Suggestions for teachers include: (a) acknowledging that they can help students develop their critical-thinking skills; (b) being sure that students are given multiple and varied opportunities to practice critical thinking in relation to science assignments, including adequate time to interact with peer-learning and to report on their observations and hypotheses regarding natural phenomena; and (c) developing and strengthening teachers’ professional practice through reflection in action and reflection on action as a part of their science instruction.
